NDI — National Disaster Inspections
AFTER PROPERTY DAMAGE

Protect what you can.
Keep a clear record.

Safety, timely communication and organized records can help you manage the next conversation. Your policy and local requirements determine your obligations.

Start with safety. Follow official evacuation and re-entry instructions. Do not enter an unsafe building or climb onto a damaged roof. Seek qualified help for work you cannot do safely. Find official local guidance →
01 / CONTACT YOUR INSURER

Ask what is needed and when.

Report the loss through your insurer’s verified channel promptly. Ask about notice requirements, forms, inspection arrangements and deadlines. Keep a dated record of the answer. Saving records in NDI does not notify your insurer or file a claim.

02 / RECORD OBSERVATIONS

Capture the condition, safely.

Take clear photos or video of accessible damage and list affected belongings. Add dates and locations. Keep original files and distinguish what you observed from a professional’s findings. For flood losses, FEMA’s flood-insurance guidance explains useful photos, receipts and material samples; follow current safety and disposal instructions.

03 / LIMIT FURTHER DAMAGE

Ask about safe temporary measures.

Policies may require reasonable steps to protect property after a loss. Ask your insurer what applies, arrange safe temporary measures with qualified help, and keep receipts. Coordinate permanent repairs with the claims process and applicable requirements. Do not delay urgent safety measures to complete an online checklist.

04 / KEEP THE QUESTIONS VISIBLE

Follow up on what is unresolved.

Keep estimates, receipts and correspondence together. Ask for a written explanation of coverage or payment decisions you do not understand. If a dispute remains, contact your insurance department or an appropriately qualified adviser. Policy limits, deductibles, exclusions and repair requirements affect outcomes; NDI cannot promise a payment or an exact restoration result.
